Diviner Manual
The original manual was drawn up by our founding Elder, Lady Silk it has been revised several times. But the basic's of Lady Silk's ideas are still used although we do not teach as much of the Tao as we once did. We do teach students how the Tao works because this is essential for one to be able to divine another's future. We have added depth to our path by adding new time alignments.
Diviner Definition: In ancient times, the "Diviner" used mysterious psychic powers to find water, the source of life. A deep understanding of nature's ways also allowed insights into the future. A diviner is one that sees, one that predicts events or developments, a person credited with extraordinary moral and spiritual insight, one that practices divination especially by concentrating on a glass or crystal globe, water or fire, or other tools (cards, bone, runes, etc.). Diviners are mages of time who seek to know the truth behind all mysteries. Our motto is that "Knowledge is Power, Truth is the key to the Universe" Diviners must understand the ways of the Nexus, giving us the ability to see the patters of life in Nexus this aiding us to be able to divine the Future.
Diviner's role in nexus:
We are diviners we are able to see into the future we give advice to people about what lies ahead. We are Oracles and Seers and have Visions about the future. We use spells and various types of methods of divinations to do readings bringing knowledge of the future. Our spells/powers are different from other mage subpaths. We are Mysterious, meaning we do not give information directly (unless necessary). We are trust worthy; anything told to a Diviner of personal nature is to remain secret/confidential. Diviners act as counselors and advisers to the Royal Persons, City Counsels and Clan Counsels. Diviners will act as diplomats, trustworthy, active advisers. Diviners will act with Honor, always.
Philosophy: "Knowledge is Power. Truth is the Key. Knowledge and Truth lead to Enlightenment. Mastery of secrets brings you closer to understanding the Universe. Each secret is part of the Pattern. As you learn the pattern, you will find your true purpose in the world. Every secret reveals to you an aspect of your soul. Divining is the reward of an enlightened soul." The Three Principles of the Diviner.
Diviners, for many centuries, in many cultures have been looked to in times of need. Being trained in the divine arts, we are blessed with the gift of knowledge. This knowledge serves us well in our day to day quest to learn. Eternally curious, a diviner pushes him/herself deeper into life's mysteries trying to understand.
Though diviners are classified together there are many types. Many diviners choose to use their powers to help the community; these Royal Seers are usually clear of speech and not as didactic as some of their brethren. Mystics, oracles and prophets tend to speak in riddles and partially formed ideas. This is not to say that they practice in half truths, for diviners are above all truthful. Many of the more secretive, diviners believe that people should not be lead straight down a path; just as diviners may take different roads to expressing their knowledge, they also have different alignments.
For the most part diviners are neutral though some do ride just on either side of the fence. This being so light and dark diviners, as their names imply, are not wholly Light or Dark.
Though diviners may have differences between them they are drawn together by mutual respect. We are a family. A diviner respects his peers for whatever their skills may be that differs from his/her own. Diviners can use many methods to come up with their answers, be it the I Ching, Runes, Tarot, Bones, Scrying etc. all methods of divination are accepted. The Diviner Circle puts emphasis on knowledge of the I Ching and must understand both Yin and Yang.
Types of Diviners
1. Gwa-gu (The Past): Diviner that are from the past now in the present. This leaves options for the diviner to rp as he/she chooses; with imagination one can do many different things.
[Light Gwa-gu]
LG = Light gwa-gu
GG = Grey gwa-gu
DG = Dark gwa-gu
Light Gwa-gu's do not take any pleasure in being unable to change a negative outcome, but they will sometimes appear. They are the most skilled of the three Gwa-gu's at using the past to see the future, but they are flawed in the way that they try to mask negative outcomes. They are the type to deliver the "good news first", and they will let the recipient know that good things will always overcome the bad times.
[Grey Gwa-gu]
Grey Gwa-gu's do not attempt to mask positive or negative outcomes - they are VERY blunt. Because of their strict beliefs in Fate & Destiny, they are the type that will "tell it like it is". People who are are hopeful but not fearful will enjoy this type of Diviner because of his or her inability to exaggerate pro's or con's.
[Dark Gwa-gu]
Dark Gwa-gu's are take great delight in their power and are always making it very clear that what they say will happen WILL happen. They are the greatest prescribers to the "History repeats itself" motto of the three kinds of Gwa-gu's, and they take a person's past into account as much as they can. Dark Gwa-gu's will often pay attention to people's past mistakes when determining just how they will fail next, and will often provide warnings of danger. Because of their strict beliefs, they do not give advice on how to avoid anything, but only how to prepare for it for it to be less of a shock. Only those truly unafraid of their destiny will come to them.
2. Mi-rae (The Future): Diviners that are here from the future. Again imagination will make this alignment very exciting.
[Light Mi-rae]
LM = Light Mi-rae
GM = Grey Mi-rae
DM = Dark Mi-rae
Light Mi-rae's are always receiving positive visions and outcomes, and they will give the converse of a negative outcome if they should receive one. They tend to go beyond the usual divination and instead they talk with the recipient, getting to know their character so they can tell them their best option. Unlike Greys who lie everything on the table and Darks who warn against the greater of many evils, Light Mi-rae's tell people the different good things that could happen, and then base their advice upon their knowledge of the recipient's character and needs.
[Grey Mi-rae]
Grey Mi-rae's have more visions than any other diviner, and they are in love with options, often telling recipients absolutely everything that could occur. They do extensive divinations, often more than one for a problem, and they make sure to let the person know what could happen depending on their actions.
[Dark Mi-rae]
Dark Mi-rae's go beyond the indifference towards the belief in Destiny of the others, and instead they actually fight against any belief in Fate. They are the greatest proponents of the power of humanity to make its own destiny, and they often speak out about this. Because of their alignment they tend to see things negatively, and when they see more than one negative outcome they advise on which is the greatest of the many evils.
3. Hyun-jae (The Present): Of course diviners from the present will continue to use our original role-play.
[Light Hyun-jae]
LH = Light Hyun-jae
GH = Grey Hyun-jae
DH = Dark Hyun-jae
Because they are closer to the Gwa-gu spectrum than the other two types, Light Hyun-jae's enjoy talking about what WILL happen aside from what a person can change. Their speciality is telling people what choices they should make to come to good fortune.
[Grey Hyun-jae]
Right in the middle of everything, Grey Hyun-jae's are Hyun-jae diviners in their purest form. They do not focus as much upon the road to good fortune as Lights, nor do they dwell on the paths to misfortune as much as the Darks. They speak mainly of the concrete, going-to-happen obstacles, and how to avoid them.
[Dark Hyun-jae]
Dark Hyun-jae's have the loosest belief in Destiny of all six mentioned so far. While they do hold some faith in fate, they tend to side more with with the choices people *can* make. While they do not take pleasure in the fall of others, they are still nicknamed "misfortune-tellers" because of their tendency to deliver bad news (or the converse of good news, as explained in the previous post). They are very quick to give advice on how to avoid misfortune, and rather than telling someone how to come to prosperity, they will tell what will happen if they go in the wrong direction, leaving it up to the recipient to realize what exactly they should do. To be sure of the risk involved, many people might want to talk to both a Light Hyun-jae and a Dark Hyun-jae before attempting anything.
Light/Dark/Grey
Light Diviners: A light diviner believes that evil has run rampant and is getting too much aid and power. They will work against the plots of evil against good, but they will not aid good outright, we are diviners, we are discrete. A light diviner will normally help almost anyone, because they believe that in aiding others, others will learn to be good, not evil, and this will balance the Tao properly towards good. Light diviners tend to go into politics to thwart the plans of evil within the government. They may tend to try and convert their darker brethren to the ways of light, but will never be offensive in doing so. A light diviner believes the best of everyone, and sees anyone that is branded or doing wrong, as mislead and able to be changed to the light. A light diviner can act in the capacity of light or grey, but will never act as dark even if a curse is placed upon them.
Grey Diviners: A grey diviner believes that the Tao basically keeps itself in balance, providing no one is actively overbalancing it, and will work against either the plots of good against evil, or the plots of evil against good, depending on who is seen to be overbalancing the Tao. They will never actively work with good nor evil, as we are diviners and neither good nor evil. They will never do anything evil nor unlawful, as nothing must threaten there place within the circle, the circle is life. A grey diviner may aid someone if they find it will balance the Tao, or just on a whim. A grey diviner can act in the capacity of light, grey, or dark. They will almost always be found in politics, as in this way they can learn the trends that are leading to the overbalancing of the Tao, and know where to tweak it to undo the harm being done by others. They are counselors to princes, kings, queens, and others in power. Where it relates to other diviners, a grey diviner will almost always be seen as light, as they will aid other diviner indiscriminately. Other diviners are family, life, people that can be counted upon.
Dark Diviners: A dark diviner believes that good is getting too much help; therefore they will actively work against the plots of good against evil, to aid in balancing the Tao. But, they will never actively aid evil as we are diviners and are not evil. They will never do anything malicious as we are diviners not shaman. If you force a dark diviner to answer you, you will get mystical answers that most would consider gibberish. Nothing can ever be allowed to threaten a diviners place in the circle, the circle is life, and therefore, they will act in a discrete manner, never showing themselves as being neither against good nor for evil in any way. A dark diviner may aid someone if they feel it is in their best interest or brings them profit, but woe to the person that tries to force their aid, as they can also be rather mischievous. (Which relates to tricky, not mean, petty, or evil. A dark diviner can act in the capacity of dark or grey, never light. Most dark diviners, other than as relates to the circle, which they respect and see as family, are solitary individuals whom would best be described as wandering mystics. They do not relate well to others and are seen as grumpy. (Which they are not, they like people, but at a distance, they are not anti-social, they just don't do well in groups other than groups of diviners.) Where it relates to other diviners, they would more properly be seen as light, as diviners are their life's blood, family, and the only people they truly have the utmost respect for.
Path Associations (Role Play)
Chongun: A Chongun is military leader. A sworn protector of a section of land. (Respect) Diviners may be strong allies with the Chonguns, Diviners are useful in helping with strategies (troop placements, etc.) and helping divine the outcome of battles. Often, Diviners may be advisors to a Chongun. Even if the Chongun do not believe in our Divine powers, they do listen. We are all part of the Tao. Even the Chongun cannot change that.
Do: "Do" is the single-edged sword. A Do is a martial master, dedicated to his weapon. (Respect) Diviners may be allies with the Do. The Diviner respects the Do's drive and discipline, it is similar to the Diviners' thirst for knowledge.
Barbarian: Is not necessarily crude or a nomad, but is an expert of outdoors survival. (Respect) Diviners respect the Barbarian's expertise in Wood Lore and abilities to survive. The Diviner respects any path that they may learn something from.
Rangers: Rangers are very knowledgeable about horticulture, cartography, and of other topics that deal with nature. (Respect) We have great respect for any path that we can learn from.
Spy: A spy specializes in disguise, investigation, and subterfuge. (Neutral) Diviners' feel pity for the Spy's tendencies to sell information and knowledge to the highest bidder, monetary gain being low on the Diviner's list of priorities. Diviners' are often competing with Spies as advisors to ranking officials. Thus, the Diviner feels contempt to animosity towards the Spy.
Merchant: A merchant is a craftsman and trader. (Neutral) Merchants are useful members of society. Diviners are neutral with Merchants.
Geomancer: Knows the earth and energy of the natural energy of a place. Capable of manipulating fine or foul energy. (Respect) Diviners respect the Geomancer. The Geomancer has learned to manipulate the natural elements; thus, Diviners' can work along side Geomancers in manipulating Matter, Energy and Time. Diviners respect any path they may learn something from.
Monk: Devoted to his or her deity. At peace and in tune with the nature of good and evil. (Respect or avoidance.. depends on role playing) The Diviner may be a very close ally with the Monk or indifferent/bitter enemies. A Diviner who follows the same deity as the Monk may become a Prophet of the deity, and work closely with the Monk. However, some deities and their Monks may find the Diviner's art blasphemous. Otherwise, Monks and Diviners have the same goals, to bring enlightenment to the Kingdom.
Muse: A musician and/or artist. (Respect) The Diviner enjoys the company of the Muse. Stories and folklore are part of the pattern that the Diviner studies, and in exchange, the Muse may receive information about some of the Mysteries that a Diviner would know.
Druid: In touch with plants and animals of the natural world. Somewhat different than the European druid. (Respect) Diviners respect the Druid's philosophy, and seek to learn how they fit into the patterns.
Shaman: A spirit speaker, and dabbler in the old forms of magic. (Neutral) The Shamans are neutral in general. Because they do know how to manipulate the spirits and speak to them we know we can learn from them. Because of past events Diviners are uncomfortable when around Shaman, cautious and alert.
